It is said that after this 1902 volcano eruption, the entire city of St. Pierre was completely demolished, leaving only a few survivors, which included a prisoner who was in a dungeon type jail cell, a man who lived on the edge of the town that escaped with severe burns and a little girl who fled on boat to a nearby cave.
